The project examines future-making in the Southern African KAZA region, focusing on carbon stock dynamics and associated ecosystem services. Our research has examined pathways of nature conservation and agricultural intensification, revealing that rural wealth is often positively correlated to ecosystem carbon, while also promoting prosperity through cattle herding. Building on this, we will explore how cattle production influences the conflicting goals of conservation and intensification futures, and how this shape both economic and ecological outcomes.
