Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
First of all, one of the largest projects in the post-Soviet space was implemented based on a survey (in-depth qualitative interviews) of active clergy and active laity. "One of" the author writes carefully, because for 30 years of work in this area he does not know of projects to interview this category of people that would go beyond 50 interviews. At least 120 were done here. It is important that many representatives of the church hierarchy agreed to give interviews, who had never before given any meaningful interviews on internal church issues. As a result of the qualitative information obtained, it became possible to analyse, describe and publish texts on the dynamics of church-state relations, primarily in Ukraine, but also in Belarus and Russia. In addition, for the first time, systematic surveys of actual church attendance were conducted in various cities and rural areas of Ukraine and in various districts of its capital city of Kyiv. These calculations refute the popular and actively used by Ukrainian politicians results of "population surveys" on adherence to one or another Orthodox Church, as well as on the frequency of church attendance. The figures turned out to be much lower, and clearly show the dominance of the UOC in terms of the number of real, and not declarative believers. Thanks to the interview, it was possible to study to a large extent the structure of intra-church regional clans and assess the degree of their influence both on the church itself and on the relationship of the church with the state and society. Particular attention was paid to one of these clans, the so-called "Leontievcy". They have a base in the Rivne region of Ukraine and neighboring regions and in the 2000s were the most powerful clan in the UOC, but now they have largely lost influence. They were used to understand how the clan structure works and how it works within a large Church. The author described their history and activities in a separate, not yet published work, which will become part of the planned book. The start of work on the project coincided with the process of vigorous intervention by the Ukrainian state in the activities of Orthodox churches. This was a big surprise for the author, and forced him to concentrate more on Ukrainian issues, although earlier it was planned to distribute work more evenly between Ukraine and Russia. However, the lengthy process of creating a "united" state, i.e. the de facto state OCU and the conflict with the UOC, the largest Orthodox Church in the country, which refused to join it, as well as subsequent events in this area, including Russian aggression against Ukraine and the withdrawal of the UOC from the Russian Orthodox Church, not only constantly provided new material for research, but also attracted considerable attention from colleagues and the press. Therefore, the project finally focused on Ukraine, although some of the publications made within its framework concerned Russia and Belarus. This is reflected in some of the many publications in the press. Unfortunately, the war that began on February 24, 2022 frustrated many of the author's plans regarding the completion of the project. On the one hand, I had to write a lot about what was happening in Ukrainian Orthodoxy in connection with the war. On the other hand, due to the small number of specialists in Germany in Ukrainian regions, I had to actively engage in commenting on current events.
