Final Report Abstract

The experience of the irreversibility of death generates manifold social practices, which aim to transcend mortality. In order to approach these phenomena in a historically adequate way, it is necessary to identify the various patterns of interpretation through which transience was understood and dealt with. The project examined different types of temporal semantics of eternity and transience in medieval visionary literature. The objects of study were Latin accounts of otherworld journeys from the High Middle Ages (12th century, SP 1),their late medieval translations into German (15th century, SP 2), which are transmitted with Ars moriendi texts, and late medieval prayer manuscripts (SP 3). These written accounts are understood as fluid texts since they operate in a field of tension, oscillating between revelation, report and narrative. Therefore, the project’s approach was interdisciplinary and employed methods from both history and literary studies. The focus lay on narratives that reflect transience through different temporalities by intertwining individual mortality and the end of the world as well as redemption and eternity through visionary otherworld journeys. These travel narratives are particularly well-suited for this purpose since temporality is substantiated in bodily and spatial experience and can thus be experienced vividly. The prayer texts examined in UP 3 also refer to space and time, because within these parameters both the relationality and the distance between the praying person and the divine addressee are tangible. The prayer books develop different strategies to blend the present and the time of salvation: In prayers for support of the terminally ill, salvation experiences of the deceased are transmitted through visions from the beyond in order to establish a spatiotemporal connection between this world and the hereafter, death as well as eternal life and earthly life. The focus on aspects of codification, authorization, and authentication of revelation, with case studies from the 12th up to the 17th century, offered precise insights into how transience was dealt with in the different societies and groups that recorded, edited, and disseminated those texts. Thus, otherworld journeys and other religious texts provided powerful frames of interpretation for the Christian Middle Ages, both in the monastic culture of the High Middle Ages and in the urban contexts of pastoral care.
