X-ray absorption spectroscopy under external stimuli – microscopic understanding and tailoring hysteresis (A03)

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 405553726

A combination of Mössbauer/X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray microscopy will be employed to derive a microscopic element-specific understanding of hysteresis in permanent magnet materials to disentangle their intrinsic and extrinsic properties. With our new ULMAG setup (with projects A01, A10, B05) we can simultaneously apply X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction techniques with magnetization and other macroscopic properties to understand their interrelation by comparison with ab initio theory and ML approaches. The sample systems will range from thin film model systems grown in project A02, over bulk samples from project A01 to compositionally inhomogeneous samples by our designated Mercator Fellow Nora Dempsey and project A10.
