Computergestützte Optimierung von piezoelektrischen Gerüsten für die Knochenregeneration

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
In this project, we investigated the influence of scaffold design on the piezoelectrical behaviour of the scaffolds and how this influences the bone regeneration process for large bone defects. To solve the elctromechanically-induced bone regeneration, the combination of Finite Element models and agentbased modelling was developed to determine cellular activity. Comparing computer model predictions of bone regeneration within piezoelectric scaffolds to experimental data, we were able to investigate the mechanisms behind bone regeneration in piezoelectric scaffolds. We found that the thickness of the electrical patches/coverings plays a key role on the bone regeneration outcome. This knowledge could in the future be used to optimize the scaffold design to promote bone regeneration and to find patient-specific solutions.
