GRK 1463: Analysis, Geometry and String Theory
Final Report Abstract
Das Graduiertenkolleg Analysis, Geometrie und Stringtheorie hat durch seine Forschungsergebnisse ebenso wie durch seine Schulen und Tagungen national und international hohe Sichtbarkeit erlangt. Es ist uns gelungen, für das Kolleg sehr gute Promovierende zu gewinnen. Neun Promotionen wurden mit der Bestnote summa cum laude ausgezeichnet, darunter die von Simon Brandhorst, der damit den Wissenschaftspreis Hannover 2018 errang. Über Auslandsaufenthalte und vielfältige Konferenzteilnahmen wurden die Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden erfolgreich in das internationale Forschungsumfeld eingebunden. Viele der Postdocs und bereits einige der Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden haben permanente Stellen im akademischen Bereich gefunden. Die Arbeit der beteiligten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler hat durch die Publikation ihrer Arbeiten in hervorragenden Zeitschriften wie ‘Annals of Mathematics’, ‘Inventiones Mathematicae’ und ‘Journal of High Energy Physics’, einen ERC Starting Grant durch Matthias Schütt und einen ERC Advanced Grant als Co-PI durch das assoziierte Mitglied Reinhard Werner sowie zahlreiche Konferenz- und Vortragseinladungen im In- und Ausland vielfältige Anerkennung erfahren. Zwischen den beteiligten Instituten hat sich eine rege Zusammenarbeit entwickelt, die sich sowohl in gemeinsamen Aktivitäten in der Lehre als auch in gemeinsamen Publikationen niedergeschlagen hat. Unter den Studierenden stießen die interdisziplinären Lehrangebote und Forschungsaktivitäten auf großes Interesse. Das Graduiertenkolleg hat auf diese Weise sowohl zur Vernetzung innerhalb der Mathematik und als auch zur Zusammenarbeit zwischen Mathematik und Theoretischer Physik beigetragen. Mit seinem Vorlesungsund Vortragsprogramm, den Workshops und Schulen hat es das wissenschaftliche Leben deutlich bereichert und einen neuen Schwerpunkt in der Fakultät geschaffen. Das Riemann Center for Geometry and Physics, das 2012 aus dem GRK heraus gegründet wurde und mit vielfältigen Workshops und Sommerschulen sowie den Riemann Fellowships zum internationalen Austausch beiträgt, ist sichtbares Zeichen der strukturellen Wirkung des GRK. Insgesamt war das GRK ein Glücksfall: für die Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden, weil es ihnen eine Ausbildung gegeben hat, mit der sie sowohl im akademischen als auch im privatwirtschafltichen Sektor punkten konnten, für die Postdoktorandinnen und Postdoktoranden, weil es ihre Karriere zum Teil deutlich beflügelt hat, für die beteiligten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, weil in der Kooperation neue Forschungsfelder erschlossen und ausgezeichnete Resultate erzielt wurden, und für die Fakultät, weil es maßgeblich zur Zusammenarbeit der beteiligten Institute und zum Zusammenwachsen der 2004 neu gegründeten Fakultät für Mathematik und Physik beigetragen hat.
