Interaction of heat transfer and thermochemical processes in agitated granular assemblies: grate system and hearth furnace floor (Scherer/Schiemann) delivers experimental datasets, which permit the understanding of the interaction of particle movement with heat and mass transfer as well as chemical reaction for thermally thick particles and to validate DEM/CFD simulations. It uses two setups, a batch grate system and a model of a hearth furnace floor. In FP2, the focus will be shifted to polydisperse systems and particles of complex shape. The grate system will further serve as a test bed for detecting particle tracks. The hearth furnace floor will be used to provide particle mechanics for complex-shaped particles. In a novel reacting grate system, particle mass loss can be measured as a function of time. The pyrolysis of wood particles and char conversion will be examined and the effect of contact heat transfer and radiative heat transfer in the bulk will be studied.
