Final Report Abstract

Walter Burley (ca. 1275-1334) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 14th century and has written an oeuvre of over 70 longer and shorter works. Of particular importance are his commentaries on Aristotle's Physics, on which he commented three times. Until now, research has focused on his last commentary, which was printed several times between 1476 and 1609. His two early commentaries, which until now were only available as manuscripts, have been neglected. The project has now made these early commentaries available in a critical edition, thus achieving one of the project’s goals. Researchers now have access to the text of the two commentaries (with careful documentation of the editor’s interventions, the manuscript variants, and the sources) and can examine their significance within the natural philosophical debate of the late Middle Ages.
