Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

Over the last decade, it was found that the family of iron oxides is not limited by the three wellknown stoichiometries, FeO, Fe2O3, and Fe3O4, but includes unconventional stoichiometries such as Fe2O, Fe4O5, Fe5O6, Fe7O9, Fe25O32. While generally the structure at ambient pressure of the novel oxides was available, information about their electronic and magnetic properties at extreme pressure-temperature conditions was very limited. This ‘Joint German-Russian Project in all fields of science’ aimed at addressing this issue by exploring the electronic and magnetic transitions in novel iron oxides at high pressures and over a wide range of temperatures employing a combination of state-of-the-art synchrotron X-ray techniques (German project part), theoretical calculations and the further development of the synchrotron instrumentation (Russian project part). The results of the project particularly focus on unraveling the interplay between structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of FeO and Fe4O5 as representative examples of iron oxides.
