Design-Based Research as a Methodological Framework in Educational Research (DBR Network)
Final Report Abstract
Linking educational research and educational practice is still a challenge, despite continuing efforts towards transfer and evidence-based practice. Design-based research (DBR) is a research genre that addresses this challenge by directly linking the generation of scientific knowledge to the design of educational interventions. The scientific network Design-Based Research as a methodological framework in educational research (DBR network) has implemented an extensive program of events and publications in three years of funding by the German Research Foundation. The program supported early career researchers, brought the scientific community in the field of DBR into a continuous exchange and created a basis for higher quality and more theoretical yield of DBR studies. At three colloquia, two symposia and several internal working meetings, researchers at all career levels, including nine guest experts from Germany and abroad, networked and exchanged views on DBR projects from different educational contexts as well as on overarching questions: What makes a good DBR study? How do DBR studies generate scientific knowledge? How can DBR be taught? In a special issue of the journal EDeR - Educational Design Research, a lively discussion has developed on the question of the scientific character and quality standards of DBR. Epistemology was one of the topics of the symposium "Knowledge by Design in Education: Getting to the Core of DBR Epistemology", which took place at the University of Paderborn in September 2022. The contributions, which were also elaborated for an EDeR special issue, show the strategies that DBR studies can use to achieve a high level of practical and theoretical relevance. At the symposium "Finding a common ground for practicing and teaching DBR" in Hamburg in September 2023, a focus was on teaching DBR. Contributions by guests from psychology and design research enriched the discourse with external perspectives on DBR. Publications, lecture videos and further information about the DBR network and its continuation as a DBR community can be found in the network blog.
