Subproject E (General Practice) Social engagement as a generative act and contribution to a good life in old age - general medical support through social prescribing

Subject Area Practical Philosophy

Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424883170

In the first funding phase, the empirical subproject 6 (SP-6) investigated the relationship between medicine and the temporal structure of a good life from the perspective of older people (aged 75 and over) and their medical and nursing caregivers. Social integration was central, whether as an important resource in the background of medical care or as a source of meaning, satisfaction and feeling needed in old age in general, and thus as an aspect of a good life. Specific opportunities for this are various forms of social engagement, which will be taken up and further investigated by subproject E (SP-E) in the second funding phase. The focus is on social engagement as a form of generativity in old age and its potential influence on health and a good life. The aim of social prescribing, which is not yet established in Germany, is to promote this through general medical care. It involves the prescription of non-pharmacological interventions, which may include various levels of social engagement, to improve health and well-being. The aim is to analyse the impact of social engagement as a generative act for a good life in old age, the links between social engagement and health, and the potential and challenges of social prescribing in general practice. Building on this, we will develop a practical guide to social engagement and health promotion through social prescribing which can be used to identify suitable patients and any barriers they may face. In new focus group discussions, the perspectives of patients and carers will be taken into account in order to gain practical insights for the implementation of social prescribing, in addition to theoretical insights for the research group's questions (in particular from SP-A (Philosophy), SP-C (Psychocardiology), SP-F (Ethics of Geriatric Care) and ZIP (Central Integrative Project). Film representations of meaningfulness and generativity in old age from SP-B (Film/TV) will serve as a source of inspiration.
