Final Report Abstract

The project examined the processing of complex sentences for people with normal hearing and people with hearing aids. Perceptual and cognitive abilities were recorded. Electrophysiological measurements were carried out and acoustically evoked potentials were examined, showing differences in the sentence processing between the groups. Longer latencies of the evoked potentials indicate slower processing in the group of hearing aid users. In more complex sentences, like relative clause sentences, the electrophysiological measures also show a later role assignment in hearing aid users. However, the correct answer score in the comprehension task did not differ between the two groups. In summary, despite the same success in solving the comprehension task, a higher cognitive effort was objectively shown in the hearing aided group. Targeted cognitive training could support hearing impaired people in everyday life.
