Cognitive Human Categorization. The Situative Ebb and Flow of Relevant Categorization (B03)
Subject Area
General and Comparative Linguistics, Experimental Linguistics, Typology, Non-European Languages
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 442261292
The subproject examines the relationship between translation and language-related human categorization. It uses the case of current cultural encounters in the context of processes of migration to study how people reciprocally categorize each other based on ‘their’ languages and the role of translation (both spoken and written) in these processes. The central hypothesis is that translation plays a major part in the creation of linguistic boundaries and affiliations. The objective of the subproject is to systematically develop “human categorization, language, and translation” as a new research field.
