Based on our previous experience with electron-proton transfer (EPT) mediated (strong), polar X-H bond activation for ring-opening functionalization of cycloalkanols and the thereby noted importance of pre-assembled reaction partners, we plan to deliberatively influence and modulate these crucial interactions to tune reactivity and selectivity. To overcome current limitations of the base-promoted PCET activation of polar X-H bonds and to potentially open up novel transformations, we will focus on a mediator approach as well as on photocatalysts promoting direct substrate interactions (unidirectional PCET). Gained insights will later be transferred to also explore such pre-assembly modulations for selective C-H activation.
