CorCliV(2) will seek a mechanistic understanding of the strongly autocorrelated (hence time-scale dependent) non-climate noise component of coral Sr/Ca and d18O records, enabling statistical correction of existing records and optimisation of future sampling. Building on this knowledge, we will produce corrected estimates of regional pre-industrial tropical multi-decadal temperature variability and provide a quantitative paleo context for recent Pacific warming pattern. We will examine whether current climate models underestimate internal variability and the potential of corrected coral records to serve as emergent constraints on the strength and structure of tropical feedbacks shaping both observed and future warming patterns.
