Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Die Bonner-Kölner Graduiertenschule für Physik und Astronomie (BCGS) ist eine gemeinsame Graduiertenschule an den Universitäten Bonn und Köln. Die Forschungsprofile der beiden Physikdepartments ergänzen sich weitgehend, so dass unsere Graduiertenschule auf einer breiten Basis fußt; von Astrophysik, Biophysik und Festkörperforschung zu Teilchenphysik, Quantenoptik und Stringtheorie. Die BCGS bietet ein fünfjähriges integriertes Programm, das sowohl das Master- als auch das Promotionsstudium umfasst. Sie wurde im Jahr 2006 mit einer kleinen Klasse von sogenannten "honors students" ins Leben gerufen. Diese Studierenden wurden in einem kompetitven Verfahren ausgewählt und erhielten Stipendien, Mentoring und Reisezuschüsse. Zusätzlich konnten sie an Forschungspraktika teilnehmen. Seit 2012 umfasst die BCGS alle Masterstudierenden und Promovierenden in Physik und Astrophysik in Bonn und Köln. Wir unterstützen dabei weiterhin eine selektive Klasse von "honors students". Das integrierte Modell einer Graduiertenschule, die den MSc und PhD kombiniert, hat sich als besonders attraktiv für internationale Studierende erwiesen. Es erlaubt ihnen, mit unterschiedlichen Ausgangskenntnissen zunächst einen Hochschulabschluss im deutschen System mit einem breiten Spektrum von Kursen abzulegen, bevor sie ein spezielles Forschungsgebiet für die Promotion auswählen. Heute kommt ein Drittel unserer MSc-Studierenden aus dem Ausland, auch angezogen von sehr selektiven "Qualifikationsstipendien" für die Lebenshaltungskosten während der MSc-Phase. Das Lehrprogramm der BCGS ist geprägt von den Prinzipien "früher Forschung" in der MSc-Phase und "kontinuierlichem Lernen" während der Promotionsphase. Bereits während des MSc führen sogenannte Intensivwochen und Forschungspraktika unsere Studierenden zu moderner Forschung hin. Während der Promotion bietet die BCGS ein breites Angebot an Fortgeschrittenenkursen, die von unseren Dozent*innen und von externen Sprecher*innen angeboten werden. Ein Mentoring-Programm und Networking-Events wie das BCGS Wochenende und die Postersitzung fördern eine gemeinsame Identität unserer Studierenden. Die BCGS hat auch die Forschungslandschaft in den beiden Physikdepartments geprägt. Bei strategische Berufungen in der Astrophysik, in der Biophysik und der Quantenoptik ergänzen häufig neue theoretische Lehrstühle bereits bestehende experimentell arbeitende Forschungsgruppen und umgekehrt.
