Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

From my perspective, the work on German real estate data where available was more successful than expected (result 1), availability of German real estate data was much worse and confusingly contradictory than expected which is a result in itself (result 2), the collaborations I formed with my host and researchers around him went far beyond my expectations (result 3) and the algorithm to establish international ownership chains is a useful starting point for further academic work (result 4). Result 1: The work on international ownership of German real estate was very promising were data was available. The clear bottleneck was the availability of German real estate data. Work still resulted in a number of policy relevant publications and garnered substantial public interest. Result 2: The attempt to expand the German real estate data largely failed but documenting this inability of German authorities to supply adequate data to researchers is a finding in itself. Result 3: The research collaboration I am starting with Gabriel Zucman and his team in Paris is very promising and already funded by the DFG and the ANR. This is exactly the kind of collaboration and international integration I was hoping for with the Walter Benjamin exchange. For me personally, this collaboration alone was worth all the effort. I hope that the project becomes successful enough such that the DFG agrees. Result 4: The proof of concept algorithm for international ownership chains developed for and tested on the German data available justifies further investment into this approach. I will extend it to more countries and improve it along several methodological dimensions in the INTREALES project. I am deeply grateful for the support provided by the Walter Benjamin scholarship, which has enabled this important work both on a scientific and on a networking level. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to Gabriel Zucman and the University of California, Berkeley, as well as the Paris School of Economics for hosting me and to the DFG for funding this exchange.
