It is the purpose of this proposed research project to combine different approaches which the two applicants persued in the past with regard to the investigation of the unconsolidated Sediments of the alpine forelands and the Rheingraben. One approach (Ellwanger) aimed at working out a combined stratigraphy valid in all five landsystems concerned, i.e. the inneralpine overdeepened valleys, the alpine foreland s.s. (glacial basins and moraine landscape of the Bodensee amphitheater etc.), the Hochrhein valley (with numerous terraces and buried valleys) and the Rheingraben as a "distal accomodation space", but also including the "overbank to the Donau" where the "classical" landscape of (meltwater) terraces is found. This is a kind of a sequence- and event stratigraphic approach (cf. attached "Arbeitspapier" -- discussion paper). The other approach (Hinderer) is concerned with various sediment bilances in the Alps, but mainly a detailed case study of the late glacial and postglacial infill of the inneralpine Rhein and Bodensee glacial basin. Further studies concern the interaction of climate, uplift and denudation in the Swiss alpine foreland. It is the purpose of the proposed project, to bilance several accumulation cycles (glacial cycles), from which not only independand control of the stratigraphic scheme should result, but also further insight into interaction between climate and tectonic even regarding distal accumulation.
