Metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are very important reactions for forming new carbon-carbon bonds. Palladium and to some extent nickel complexes have been generally used. Both of these metal-catalyses have some drawbacks (moderate turnovers, metal price, toxicity, chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity). In this proposal, we propose to investigate new cross-coupling reactions using unconventional metals like iron, manganese, cobalt, ruthenium and rhodium complexes with functionalized arylmagnesium and alkenylmagnesium compounds. Polyfunctional heterocycles are important synthetic targets. We propose as a second topic to perform carbocuprations of various alkynes with polyfunctional organocopper species in an intramolecular and if possible in an intermolecular fashion. We plan also to use the new polyfunctional magnesium reagents jointly developed in our laboratories in ring closure reactions for the synthesis of highly functionalised heterocycles. Finally, exploratory work will be perform C-H activations of unactivated aromatic ring positions by palladium complexes.
