The aim of the project is to understand the magnetic properties of metallo-supramolecular mesophases. These mesophases consist of periodic arrangements of transition metal ions tightly coupled through ditopic bis-terpyridine ligands complexed to amphiphilic molecules. The composite material is readily prepared by self-assembled. The modularity of this approach provides extensive control of structure and function from the molecular to the macroscopic length scale. The magnetic properties of the assemblies can be tailored through the design of the supramolecular architecture, in particular by the short-range order of the metallo-units. First experiments indicate a thermally induced diamagnetic to paramagnetic transition, which is most likely associated with a low to high spin transition caused by a structural rearrangement of the amphiphilic mesophase and the coordination geometry of the central metal ions. It is our purpose to develop most accurate structure-property relationships of these complex, semi-ordered supramolecular materials in order to understand how the structural changes of the architecture affect the magnetic properties. The project has a high prospect of success due to the intimate collaboration of chemistry and physics.
