SFB 237:  Unordnung und große Fluktuationen

Subject Area Physics
Term from 1987 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5474568

The subject of our research are phenomena which are characterized by disorder and large fluctuations. Our goal is to elucidate the mathematical and physical structure of those phenomena, rather than a detailed study of individual material properties. Three classes of problems are the focus of our reasearch: In section A we look at systems whith quenched disorder. Renormalization group methods are applied to disordered ferromagnets, spin glasses, random-field systems and localization problems. In addition, the spectra of stochastic Schrödinger operators are studied. In section B we study nonlinear dynamical systems driven by stochastic processes, including quantum fluctuations, with respect to their universal and chaotic properties. Finally, in section C the subject is critical behavior infinite geometries and in non-equilibrium systems, as well as strongly fluctuating systems of non-thermal nature (polymers, population and evolution dynamics, traffic, models of cluster formation, etc.).
