SFB 557:  Control of Complex Turbulent Shear Flows

Subject Area Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Computer Science, Systems and Electrical Engineering
Term from 1998 to 2010
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5482364

Turbulent flows show a non-linear behaviour and can in most cases be investigated experimentally or numerically only at high costs. For the last two decades one of the most important challenges in this field have been control and optimization of fluid flows with the goal to decrease flow resistance, to reduce the flow noise of vehicles and machines, and to improve mixing (e.g. in combustion chambers).
The collaborative research centre 557 consists of 17 subprojects which are all located at Technische Universität Berlin. The topics comprise investigations of the control of separated flows
(experimentally and numerically), schemes of optimal control, the reduction of flow noise, the application of control theory problems to fluid dynamics and the development of micro-mechanical sensors (MEMS).
