SFB 556:  Heart failure and arrhythmias - from cell to bedside

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2000 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5483922

The basic goal of the collaborative research centre 556 is to achieve a better understanding of the mechanisms of the development, progression, and potential regression of heart failure and associated arrhythmias. On the basis of the expected gain of knowledge, new therapeutic strategies for the fight against life-threatening cardiac pump failure and arrhythmias may be generated. The molecular mechanisms and the interaction of heart failure and arrhythmias are addressed in 12 subprojects with numerous complementary methods. Researchers from different clinical departments and specialities as well as research institutes are working together in a cooperative and interdisciplinary environment to investigate isolated molecules (channels), isolated cells or organs, animal models and in-vivo human conditions. Different models of pharmacological (cell culture), physiological (channel function), and genetically transmitted arrhythmias and heart failure (transgenic mice, human molecular genetic studies) are used to approach problems and provide solutions in basic research and clinical medicine. A close interrelation between experimental research and clinical science gives room for a field of promising research with strong and increasing impact on social economics and health care issues.
