The transformation from one type of energy to another type accompanies all processes in our world and often propels them. Many of them - as chemical reactions, as a catalyst or in a sensor, mechanical friction or scattering of electrons in a microprocessor - occurs at surfaces or interfaces of solid material.
The related "dissipation" of the energy, which is the distribution of the primary type of energy input in many different channels, consists, from a microscopic point of view, of a series of energy transfer steps between the various electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in the system. Finally, the energy is that much delocalized, so that only a higher temperature or some changes of material remain.
The collaborative research centre targets the clarification of these elementary procedures through the energy dissipation at surfaces. The program is broadly designed and comprises the whole spectrum of stimulation and relaxation, from the eV regime (particle interaction, laser stimulation, reactions and surfaces) through phonons and friction losses in the meV regime, to the meV area (electromigration). The research subgroups are devided into three sections: particles, dynamics, and friction.
