Project C2 (Hirsch) applies the principles uncovered in C1, C3 to design novel reactivity on flakes of two-dimensional dichalcogenide semiconductors. Appropriate functionality will be built into the dichalcogenide, considered as the substrate, either a posteriory or directly during its growth, to be activated and exploited as nucleation sites subsequently. The long-term goal is to control nucleation of growth of a second low-dimensional semiconductor phase on the first, and thereby deliver designer heterostructures for building devices (F6). The structure and electronic structure of intermediate states and final heterostructures will be investigated with C5, S1-S5, M2.
