Fibroblasts play a key role in immune-mediated diseases such as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis because they influence tissue damage and inflammation. This project aims to identify fibroblasts that remain active after successful treatment of arthritis and that may therefore contribute to disease relapse. We will characterise their role in recurring inflammation using molecular imaging methods, gene expression analysis and gene editing. Our long-term goal is to develop new therapies that target persistently active fibroblasts, thereby preventing relapses and chronic tissue damage in arthritis patients and enabling them to achieve sustained, drug-free remission.
