Design and exploration of new MOF based size exclusion chromatography materials. The project aims at the utilization of the sharp pore size distribution of MOFs filling the size gap between zeolite and silica based materials. This feature in combination with the extraordinary flexibility in MOF network design, due to the variability of the organic linkers, will be used to generate, as part of the backbone, specific analyte lattice interaction environments based on geometry, adsorptive strength, and chirality. This is in contrast to existing materials, where modification are usually implemented by attaching rather spacious organic units to the material filling largely the pores and thus causing a certain division between size exclusion and adsorption chromatography. Within the project, acetylene based linkers will be used as slim but rigid structural units to form network structures with easily accessible and large pores. Besides other interactions, these linkers will also allow to address specific separation problems involving soft acids via C-H/π contacts. The acetylene group in combination with zinc carboxylate based SBUs permits to select independently the type of SBU and linker for the network formation. Chromatographic experiments will be carried out to evaluate the generated materials and to compare them to existing ones.
