This research project aims at developing methods for physically consistent, three-dimensional modeling and rendering of real astronomical nebulae. While, in the first funding period, we have developed methods for reconstruction and visualization of plausible static 3D models based on observed image data, we plan for the second funding period to employ measured P-V spectral data and hydrodynamic simulation techniques in order to include the temporal evolution of astronomical nebulae and reconstruct dynamic volume models. In addition, the class of supported objects will be extended by reflection nebulae whose three-dimensional geometry can, in specific cases, be determined from light echoes within the nebulae. To make optimal use of the resolution and display quality of modern digital planetariums, we plan to develop automatic and interactive techniques to increase the degree of detail of reconstructed models in a scientifically well-founded and plausible way. Our objective is to make full use of opportunities provided by modern digital planetariums: with our reconstructed dynamic models, we will illustrate those astronomical objects and cosmological phenomena for a broad audience in a visually impressive, yet scientifically profound way.
