The Transregional Collaborative Research Centre focuses on central questions in experimental and theoretical neutrino physics. After the discovery of neutrino oscillations we know that neutrinos are massive. This opens a window to physics beyond the standard model of elementary particle science. Several projects of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre aim to measure the absolute neutrino masses and pursuit to answer the question whether the neutrino is it's own antiparticle. Additionally, a more precise extraction of oscillation parameters, the theoretical question of the genesis of neutrino masses and the link between astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics are main aspects of this programme.
Search for dark matter is also in the focus of some projects due to the similarity of neutrinos to the proposed weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which can be responsible for cold dark matter in the universe. In general low energy physics of neutrinos and WIMPs is the programme of the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre as the discovery potential in this field is very high. The groups involved exhibit a large expertise in this field, too. The theoretically orientated projects however are distributed in a wide manner as they will act as a common bracket for the whole Transregional Collaborative Research Centre and as a tie to external activities in this field.
In this programme several new international experiments (GERDA, KATRIN, DOUBLE-CHOOZ, CRESST) are present as well as projects where the feasibility of experiments in the near and far future is studied. This encompasses the development of cryogenic detectors as well as studies of the discovery potential of a new observatory for low energy neutrinos (LENA) coming either from the Sun, the Earth or from supernova explosions.
