Project Details
GSC 82: Graduate School Of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN-LMU)
Subject Area
Neurosciences
Term
from 2006 to 2019
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 24184143
The Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN-LMU) envisages six major goals:
(1) to link research groups in the fields of cellular and systemic neurosciences, theoretical neurobiology, cognitive neuropsychology, and neurophilosophy into a unique horizontal, integrated network;
(2) to create a stimulating environment for novel formulations, solutions of problems and concepts by combining the different approaches and techniques of biology and computational neurosciences, of neurophysiology, of neuropsychology and imaging of brain activity (fMRI), and of neurophilosophy;
(3) to provide a well-balanced research and training programme that addresses general and individual aspects, thus preparing a platform for graduates to develop their own scientific visions;
(4) to manage the GSN-LMU as a distinct institution for PhD and MD-PhD graduation;
(5) to embed the GSN-LMU in a supportive vertical structure, so as to offer the best graduates a career. The GSN-LMU will be established under the umbrella of the new Munich Center for Neurosciences-Brain Mind LMU, which will coordinate the neurosciences in Munich and will further strengthen strategic nodes in the Munich Neuroscience Network by three additional chairs in neuroscience (computational neurosciences, functional imaging, and neurophilosophy); and
(6) to conjoin the GSN-LMU with technological, industrial (brain and machine), and cultural institutions (e.g., Munich Competence Center of Ethics).
The scope will be broad, but the focus will be on systemic neurosciences. Typical interdisciplinary topics for specific interdisciplinary research projects are links "From Single Cells to Complex Circuits", "From System Analysis to Mathematical Modelling", "From Perception and Cognition to Mind and Neurophilosophy", and "From Biology to Technical Solutions". The long-term vision is to unify all teaching activities of programmes in neuroscience under the umbrella of the Munich Center for Neuroscience-Brain Mind with the GSN-LMU as the center for scientific education on the campus Grosshadern Martinsried.
