Role of microglia in chronic inflammation and long-term consequences after stroke (B12)

Subject Area Molecular and Cellular Neurology and Neuropathology
Clinical Neurology; Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 259373024

Inflammation and immune responses play a crucial role in the development and progression of stroke. We aim to investigate the impact of stroke-induced chronic inflammation on microglial cell function and its contribution to post-stroke cognitive decline in the aging brain. We will perform molecular and cellular analysis of microglia in young and aged mice with and without stroke-associated pulmonary infections. We will identify specific molecular mechanisms that modulate microglial neuroprotective phenotype during the chronic phase of stroke. Human CSF and post-mortem brain specimens will also be analyzed to consolidate the findings.
