Basics of a substrate-specific design of the cutting edge.

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term from 2016 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 327242658

Today it is known, that a significant increase in the performance of cutting tools can be achieved due to suitable rounded cutting edges. Furthermore, knowledge exist in order to design the cutting edge rounding with respect to the material properties and process parameters. However, for the design of the cutting edge rounding the consideration of the substrate properties of the cutting tool is highly relevant due to the determination of the stresses in the wedge. Therefore within the project the relationship between acting load, substrate properties and resultant and wear behavior is characterized. The aim of this research project is therefore to acquire basic knowledge regarding the influence of substrate properties in interaction with the cutting edge rounding on the stress in the wedge and wear mechanisms.
