FOR 945:  Nanomagnets: From Synthesis over Interactions with Surfaces to Function

Subject Area Chemistry
Computer Science, Systems and Electrical Engineering
Mathematics
Physics
Term from 2008 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 46609317

Starting from the synthesis, characterisation and optimisation of nanomagnets, the main focus of this Research Unit lies on the study of the interactions of the nanomagnets with their surrounding, especially with metallic or isolating substrates or with their encapsulations. In this respect, the nanomagnets should be deposited and organised on surfaces and the interaction of the nanomagnets with the surface and/or thin films should be investigated experimentally as well as theoretically. Therefore, the properties of the nanomagnets will be comparatively examined in the solid state, in solution and on the surface. These systematic investigations on the influence of the surfaces on the electronic and thus magnetic structures of the nanomagnets and - vice versa - on the influence of the nanomagnets on the properties of the surfaces will provide fundamental new insights on proposed applications of nanomagnets in molecular electronic devices, spintronics and memory devices.
