The Collaborative Research Centres working programme is devided into two project fields, "R" and "D". These are the initials of German words, "R" for "resorbable" (= temporary) and "D" for "permanent" implants with 5 and 7 subprojects, respectively.
-- In Project Section R, resorbable implants will be developed. At the same time, the whole range of development will be covered by the variable coordination of the subproject fields. Together with other disciplines and in a continuous feedback, the material sciences create the original material, whose structuring, working and function is coordinated with regard to individual application. By means of simulation and calculation methods, an abstract image of the reality in models will be reached, the aim of which is to show the actual sequences and procedures through comparison, adjustment and approach so that resulting problems from implant materials and implants can be predicted and prevented in advance. In Project Section R, the reference to medicine in view of the living organism is also made, as here the applied materials and procedures with the themes of cell biology and biocompatibility will be examined concerning their influence on cells and tissue, e.g. by absorption, and will be further developed.
-- In Project Section D, permanent implants are the main interest. Besides the development of adapted basic material, the material behaving as inertly as possible during the application period, especially the surface, is given special attention. Thus the function and durability of each implant will be largely determined by its shape. In this project section with the development of material, shaping, working and coating, the required interface features will be especially determined, examined and finally created for application.
