SPP 1027:  Evolution entwicklungsbiologischer Prozesse

Subject Area Biology
Term from 1997 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5467769

The program concentrates on the analysis of the principles of the evolution of developmental processes. It starts from the knowledge about model organisms, like Drosophila, for which there is already a broad insight into the functions of genes that are involved in development and cellular differentiation. This knowledge allows now to do comparative analysis of these genes in other organisms to study evolutionary changes in these processes. The program addresses the question in how far there is a conservation of molecular ontogenetic princinples and in how far these are reflected in morphological conservation. The major aims are the search for universal molecular mechanisms active in the early development of metazoa, but also the question of which changes lead to morphological diversity. Theprojects will analyse interacting cascades of developmental genes, docomparative embryological studies with respect to cell-cell communication, as well as systematic mutagenesis to compare mutant phenotypes of certain genes in different organisms and different developmental context.
