The priority programme "Liquid Atomisation and Spray Processes" involves experimental studies and numerical simulations of fundamental atomisation mechanisms and transport processes in sprays. Various types of atomisation are being studied: liquid sheet, periodically excited jets, pressure swirl, hollow cone, effervescent and nozzles with cavitation. The experimental studies are supported by a high-speed visualisation system (100MHz, 8 frames), shared by all project partners. Other measurement techniques include synchronised photography, the phase Doppler technique, laser-induced fluorescence, particle image velocimetry and gas-phase image velocimetry. Several studies examine atomisation into elevated or oscillating pressures. Many of the experimental studies have accompanying project partners working on the simulation of the atomisation process. These simulations are performed largely using direct numerical simulations, employing combinations of interface capturing and interface tracking routines. Close co-operation is maintained to insure well-defined boundary and initial conditions.
