SFB 550:  Recognizing, Localizing, Acting: Neurocognitive Mechanisms and their Flexibility

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2000 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5484149

The collaborative research centre aims at contributing to an improved understanding of the neuronal underpinnings of higher (cognitive) brain functions. The cognitive neurosciences deal with a wide spectrum of functions. The research program of the collaborative research centre 550 emphasizes a group of questions dealing with spatial perception, spatial and object exploration as well as the role of movement for perception, including aspects of development and plasticity of the functions at stake. An improved understanding of cognitive functions and their plasticity might in the long run lead to improved therapeutic approaches useful for the rehabilitation of patients, for instance by yielding new and better physical therapies and might also contribute in the long run to the development of efficient neural protheses. Furthermore, the work of the collaborative research centre may reveal computational solutions, used by real brains in order to deal with complex problems of space perception and spatial orientation which might turn out to be useful for the development and improvement of technical solutions.
