FOR 543:  Educational Processes, Development of Competences and Formation of Decision on Selection in Early and Primary Education

Subject Area Social and Behavioural Sciences
Term from 2004 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5470979

Educational careers and acquisition of competences in Germany are strongly influenced by institutional switches at the end of primary school. The level of competence reached at this moment and the associated educational decisions about the further school career are result of a longer history of experiences and constellations in families, Kindergarten and elementary school in their interaction and covariation with child characteristics. They are result of cumulative developmental processes and chains of decisions, about the mutual relationships of which we know comparatively little till now. Both, the educational institutions Kindergarten and elementary school as well as the living and learning conditions provided by parents at home are substantially involved in both processes. Theoretically and empirically, there is a gap in research regarding how Kindergarten and elementary school support, foster or hinder these educational processes in detail and how they cooperate above successive institutional levels of education.
Precise models on the interrelation between individual, institutional and family characteristics and processes and how they work together in promoting developmental change and/or differences in performance level are still missing. The interdisciplinary Research Unit aims to investigate processes of acquisition of competences and the forming of decisions on the further school career of children during the preschool- and elementary school years and their interdependency in a longitudinal study. The study focuses on:
-- the relationship of structural and process oriented conditions and educational orientations in family and the educational institutions Kindergarten and elementary school in their role primarily for development of competences in language and cognition and in forming of educational decisions about the further school career
-- the connections of the learning at the two levels Kindergarten and elementary school
The questions sketched above will be pursued in five projects. The projects will make use of two longitudinal studies. One longitudinal study follows preschool children aged three through eight years (as a rule: end of second grade of elementary school). The second longitudinal study follows students from the beginning of 3rd grade up to the end of 6th grade. The study will employ qualitative as well as quantitative methods.
