Ionic solid solutions get more and more important in a lot of advanced technologies, e.g. as ionic conductors, dielectric or magnetic materials, luminescent substances and sensor materials. The desired properties are often obtained by substitution of components in the cation or anion sublattice. The intention of the program is to push the development of such materials under the viewpoint of basic science. The efforts are focused on the reproducible synthesis of ionic solid solutions with defined composition and phase range. The study of their physical and physicochemical properties is included with the aim to develop a microscopic understanding of both synthesis and properties. Models for the relation between substitution, microscopic and macroscopic properties will be developed. An additional aim of the research is optimisation of material properties, which includes the workscope of material science. Metal oxides, whose properties will be controlled by substitution in the cation or anion sublattice, represent the objects to be examined. The studies are focused on a modification of the anion sublattice using "simple" anions like S2-, F-, N3-. Experiences attained in this program will assist to close the gap between the continuously growing importance of ionic high-technology materials and the often insufficiently understood chemical and physical fundamentals.
