FOR 440:  Prevention of Ischemia Reperfusion Injury

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2001 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5468499

Temporary reduction or loss of perfusion of solid organs induces ischemia reperfusion injuries (IRI). IRI can severely impare organ function and thus are dangerous side-effects of surgical (resection, transplantation) as well as medical (coronary dilatation) interventions. IRI are main factors of organ shortage in liver transplantation by induction of non-function or severe dysfunction after transplantation and by preventing the use of sligthly damaged organs. Therefore, aim of the interdisciplinary research unit is the implementation of new avenues of prevention of IRI of liver, heart and pancreas. This includes characterization of pivotal pathomechanisms of IRI and the influence of prevention. Transfer to patient care including prospective randomized controlled trials is an essential part of the programme. The new strategies comprise hormonal and ischemic preconditioning and the postischemic application of glutathione.
