SPP 1005:  Genetische und molekulare Aufklärung von Prozessen der Merkmalsausprägung bei Nutzpflanzen

Subject Area Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine
Term from 1996 to 2001
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5466824

The main aim of this research programme is the elucidation of gene functions involved in major traits of crop plants. This is approached by the characterisation of mutants and the cloning of respective genes. The programme focuses on crop species with a substantial importance in agriculture and horticulture. Emphasis is given to yield stability of crop plants; particularly resistances against fungal pathogens, viruses and tolerance to abiotic stress are addressed. In this context, investigations on nutrient efficiency and sink capacity are carried out as well. Furthermore, developmental processes and genetic systems are studied leading to a more efficient use of heterotic effects in plants. Finally, cloned and characterised genes will be available facilitating an improvement of crop plants via genetic engineering.
