This priority programme investigates the question, how the alterations of activity and rest, the daily fluctuations of body temperature or hormones, or the leaf movement of plants are generated endogenously by circadian oscillators and how they are synchronized (entrained) to the environment. The research focuses on cellular mechanisms. For example, the intracellular signal transduction cascades involved in the entrainment mechanism are investigated, proteins and RNAs are isolated and analyzed for the circadian oscillations, or genes are isolated which are instrumental in the generation of circadian rhythmicity. This basic research is a prerequisite for or understanding of circadian pathologies in humans or the temporal adaptation strategies of microorganisms, plants, and animals. This chronobiological program is highly interdisciplinary, ranging from bio-medical issues to plant ecology, and concerns many scientific disciplines (medicine, neuroanatomy, neurohistology, and neurophysiology, as well as molecular biology, cell biology, plant physiology, microbiology and genetics).
