SPP 1017:  Transition

Subject Area Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Term from 1996 to 2002
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5467389

The cooperative priority programme (VSPP) "Transition" is an innovative pilot project with active participation of scientists from universities, large-scale research establishments (DLR, PTB) and industry. The intention is to concentrate all subject-specific resources existing in Germany to carry out coordinated projects in a common programme by different partners with equal rights. The aim of the VSPP is the research of the complex transition processes during laminar-turbulent transition in application-oriented boundary layer flows by coordinated development and validation of new experimental and theoretical/numerical methods. To these procedures belong not only recently developed measurement methods that provide a very high information density and that can be used to capture complex three-dimensional and unsteady flows but also modern simulation procedures, like "Direct Numerical Simulation" (DNS), "Non-Local Instability Theory" (NOLOT) or parabolized disturbance differential equations (PSE). By studying the very complex transition mechanisms the investigations aim at gaining new knowledge about transition prediction and delay of transition as well as an improvement of measuring techniques and numerical simulation procedures used. The theoretical and experimental investigations are supplemented by flight tests. In this case the cooperation with DLR and industry is necessary from the start because only they have aircraft and test facilities on a sufficient scale.
