SPP 1037:  Neue Precursorkeramik aus kondensierten molekularen Vorstufen

Subject Area Materials Science and Engineering
Term from 1997 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5468128

The solid-state thermolysis of precursors provides a means for the architectural design of novel ceramic materials on an atomic scale. As a result the composition, structure and thus the properties of these materials can be varied and controlled to a large extent. The molecular structure of the preceramic compounds strongly influences the microstructure and the properties of the corresponding ceramic solids. Consequently, the basic mechanisms during the transformation of the molecular units into the ceramic solids are investigated within the scope of this priority programme. Furthermore, the structure of the products obtained after thermolysis as well as the phase formation and the development of the microstructure induced by the crystallisation of these solids is studied. Another main interest is represented by comprehensive treatment of the whole process that extends from the synthesis of the molecular units to materials relevant to applications. These research efforts are accompanied by the characterisation of the intermediate products and the investigation of the physical and chemical behaviour of the materials in order to gain more insight into the correlation between the molecular architecture of the precursors and the structure as well as the properties of the obtained ceramics. An important item to achieving this goal is the interdisciplinary character of the priority programme ensured by the intensive and close co-operation of material scientists, chemists and physicists.
