SPP 1182:  Building Sustainable with Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC)

Subject Area Construction Engineering and Architecture
Term from 2005 to 2012
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 12591437

Buildings out of standard concrete are traditionally heavy, massive and spend considerable quantities of energy and raw materials. On the one hand this is caused by a high density of the constituents gravel, sand and cement and by a high energy consumption of annually about 70 Gigajoule (GJ) for the cement production. On the other hand the strength of standard concrete is limited because big profiles with steel reinforcement are necessary in order to absorb loads and strains which appear in the building. In case of wide suspended devices - like bridge decks or girders - the own weight of the concrete limits the possible span but not the working load.
In contrast, Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a completely new, very dense concrete with a steel-like high compressive strength of up to 250 N/mm² and a bending strength up to 50 N/mm². UHPC has a 10 times higher compressive strength than standard concrete. Buildings with this material can be created more filigree, easier and more aesthetic. Moreover, UHPC is extremely resistant against corrosion. In future structural damages can be avoided whose repair costs are up to billions of Euro annually. UHPC opens completely new possibilities for the construction with concrete. With the same components approximately 60 percent of the raw materials, as well as about 40 percent of the energy and emissions of CO2 can be saved with UHPC.
In this Priority Programme the following main targets will be followed:
-- creation of scientific based data regarding the performance of Ultra-High Performance Concrete from the raw materials up to the finished devices and buildings
-- reaching an understanding of the basic structural context with the material composition
-- getting consolidated scientific conclusions regarding the durability
-- creation of bases of dimensioning and constructions according to the material properties including joining technology
