SPP 1031:  Quasikristalle: Struktur und physikalische Eigenschaften

Subject Area Physics
Term from 1997 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5467912

With the priority programme 1031 the quasicrystalline state is beinginvestigated as third form of solid matter apart from thenormal-crystalline and the glassy-amorphous one. Due to the unusualquasiperiodic structure quasicrystals display also unusual physicalproperties. The relations of structure and properties are studied in six large thematic points: A Synthesis and Characterization. B Structural Properties and Mathematical Modelling. C Electronic and Magnetic Properties. D Thermal and Dynamic Properties. E Mechanical Properties. F Surfaces and Thin Films. The program requires a wide range of methods, among them: Tiling theory, analysis of structure and dynamics with x-ray-, electron-, neutron- and ultrasound-spectroscopy, diffusion- and deformation-experiments, surface analyses, numerical simulations. Of central importance is the precise synthesis of well-defined quasicrystalline samples, with which the experimentalists are being supplied. The priority programme is closely collaborating with research groups from other European countries, in particular with those from France, which previously were connected in the Groupement de Recherche - Concertation pour l'Investigation des Quasicristaux (GDR-CINQ).
