SPP 1024:  Ideen als gesellschaftliche Gestaltungskraft im Europa der Neuzeit

Subject Area Humanities
Term from 1997 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5467666

The central intention of this research unit is to promote a renewal of the traditional history of ideas/intellectual history in Germany and thereby connect it to models in international historiography and cultural studies. Definite themes or objects of study in current research are not so much what this program emphasizes, but rather central methodological questions and ways of looking at ideas and intellectual historical processes.Ideas are considered canons of thought that, depending how they are constituted, are analyzed in their different guises - as knowledge for education or salvation, everyday or scientific knowledge, as symbolic structures or systems of belief - and also in their respective historical and social contexts, and/or in their individual functions. The projects will investigate ideas molding societies and primarily concentrate methodologically on the effects of these ideas in different directions: (a) ideas in their form and function as historically significant systems of interpretation and styles of thinking about the past of individuals, groups, or institutions; (b) ideas in their typical regional or socially-constructed dissemination and communication processes, as well as (c) ideas in their significance for general and scholarly knowledge. Concentrating on modern Europe, the program ist open to multiple disciplines and should support those projects that are or can be connected to interdisciplinary work.
