SPP 1104:  Colloidal Magnetic Fluids: Basics, Development and Application of New Ferrofluids

Subject Area Thermal Engineering/Process Engineering
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 2000 to 2006
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5470703

The program deals with research on colloidal suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles. Flow and properties of these so called ferrofluids can be remarkably influenced by moderate magnetic fields. The main interest of the program will focus on "viscous and viscoelastic properties of magnetic fluids" and on "development of biocompatible ferrofluids and their application in medicine".Both fields of interest have a couple of common problems and research goals that will enable a strong interdisciplinary interaction that is expected to force intense development in the field. Mainly the common chemical questions in the preparation of magnetic fluids, their characterization and numerous basic questions concerning the microstructural properties of ferrofluids are expected to be junction points between the disciplines.
